Started 14 years ago, Progressive Waste Solutions has rapidly expanded its company, acquiring BFI in Canada and IESI Corp in the states. Progressive provides full-service waste collection, from recycling to landfill disposal. The company provides services in the South and the Northeast regions of the country as well as Canada. The company currently has 3, 984 employees nationwide.

4. Stericycle Inc.

Stericycle is not your average landfill disposal company. It is actually a compliance company that specifically collects and disposes of regulated substances like medical and hazardous waste. Founded in 1989, it is now the nation's largest provider of medical waste disposal. Stericycle has an annual revenue of $2, 142.807 million.

3. Clean Harbors

Clean Harbors provides environmental, energy and industrial services. They dispose of hazardous waste for companies of all sizes. They also service federal, state, provincial and local governments with their hazardous waste generation. Started in 1980, the company now has over 400 service locations in North America.

2. Republic Services

Republic Services is actually quite new to the waste industry. It was founded in 1998 but quickly emerged as the second largest waste company in the United States. It currently has a market value of $39.03 and now serves over 28, 000 communities throughout the country. Much of its rapid growth was due to Republic's purchase of Allied Waste Industries. Allied Waste was a larger competitor, but wa bought out for $6.1 billion in 2008.

The largest waste company in the United States, Waste Management is a name that many are familiar with. It was founded in 1968 by Wayne Huizenga and Dean Buntrock. It currently has a market value of $46.09 and they currently serve more than 20 million customers in the United States and Canada. Waste Management, alone with its biggest competition Republic Services handles more than half of all garbage collection in our country. With over 21, 000 collection and transfer vehicles, Waste Management is the largest trucking fleet in the waste industry.
